Computer Science
The Computer Science PhD at Cornell Tech is the same program as in the Department of Computer Science (CS) at Cornell University. Any CS field member can advise CS PhD students. The CS degree requirements in Ithaca and the Cornell Tech campus are the same. Students interested in a PhD in computer science at Cornell Tech should therefore apply to the CS department of Cornell University. The application process is described here and does not distinguish between the campuses.
In their first year in the CS program, PhD students take courses in Ithaca and initiate research with faculty within the CS department in Ithaca and/or at Cornell Tech. Those who choose to work with advisors at Cornell Tech generally then relocate to New York City. PhD students at Cornell Tech can engage Ithaca faculty on their committees and are welcome to spend time in Ithaca as appropriate for their research. Currently, most Cornell Tech students spend at least their first two semesters in Ithaca to fulfill their course requirements.
Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Electrical and Computer Engineering PhD at Cornell Tech is the same program as in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Cornell University. Any ECE field member can advise ECE PhD students. The ECE degree requirements in Ithaca and on the Cornell Tech campus are the same. Students interested in a PhD in ECE at Cornell Tech should therefore apply to the School of ECE at Cornell University. The application process is described here and does not distinguish between the campuses.
ECE PhD students typically spend their first year taking classes in Ithaca as well as initiating research with faculty. Students who choose an advisor at Cornell Tech relocate to New York City.
Information Science
The Information Science PhD at Cornell Tech is the same program as in the Department of Information Science (IS) at Cornell University. Any IS field member can advise IS PhD students. The IS degree requirements in Ithaca and the Cornell Tech campus are the same. Students interested in a PhD in information science at Cornell Tech should therefore apply to the IS department of Cornell University. IS students typically begin their studies in New York City at Cornell Tech.
Operations Research
The Operations Research PhD at Cornell Tech is the same program as in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering (OR) at Cornell University. Any OR field member can advise OR PhD students. The OR degree requirements in Ithaca and on the Cornell Tech campus are the same. Students interested in a PhD in operations research at Cornell Tech should therefore apply to Cornell University. The application process is described here and does not distinguish between the campuses.
In their first year in the OR program, PhD students take courses in Ithaca and initiate research with faculty within the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering in Ithaca and/or at Cornell Tech. Those who choose to work with advisors at Cornell Tech then relocate to New York City. Depending on the arrangements with the advisor and the requirements of the specific research path chosen by the student, the amount of time spent in Ithaca can extend into the second year of the PhD program.
Operations, Technology, and Information Management
The Operations, Technology, and Information Management (OTIM) PhD at Cornell Tech is the same program as in the SC Johnson College of Business in Ithaca. OTIM PhD students are advised by a business field member. The OTIM degree requirements in Ithaca and at Cornell Tech are the same. Students interested in a PhD in OTIM at Cornell Tech should therefore apply to the SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University. The application process is described here and does not distinguish between the campuses. All OTIM PhD students typically spend their first year taking classes in Ithaca as well as initiating research with faculty. Students with an advisor at Cornell Tech will then relocate to New York City.
The OTIM area emphasizes quantitative methods of analysis to address high-impact economic decision problems. Typical problems addressed include those related to managing retail networks, online marketplaces, health care providers, e-commerce operations, sourcing in globally distributed supply chains, hospitality operations, etc. The methods that students will learn in the program include economic modeling, econometric analysis, operations research, data analytics, machine learning, and behavioral economics. Our faculty have recently advised students who accepted faculty positions at the University of Michigan (Ross), University of Pennsylvania (Wharton), University of Chicago (Booth) and the London Business School among others.
