Three years ago, Cornell Tech master’s student Vini Tripathii’s mother became ill, leading to the amputation of her hand.

“My mother, who has always been so active and independent, suddenly found herself struggling with simple, mundane tasks,” said Tripathii, M.Eng. ’20. “I thought when she got a prosthetic, it would fix everything. It didn’t.”

Frustrated by the low functionality of existing prosthetics, Tripathii and her brother, an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, founded a company, Invictus BCI, that applied recent advances in deep learning and neuroengineering to design a more intuitive and cost-efficient model.

Invictus BCI was among the four winners chosen from 10 finalists at Cornell Tech’s annual Startup Awards, announced at the virtual Open Studio event May 15. The winners will receive up to $100,000 in preseed funding, including continued support through access to the Cornell Tech spinout team, which offers weekly meetups with spinout and Runway Startup Postdoc companies, founder networking events and investor introductions, among other perks.

The other winners were Buzr, a service connecting building intercoms to smartphones; Enroute, a platform providing tools for seamless patient transportation within a hospital; and Ash, which provides personalized at-home testing kits to detect sexually transmitted infections.

OnePlace, a software hub to help families collaborate and store information, was named runner-up, and will receive support from the Cornell Tech spinout team.

“I’m so impressed with this year’s group of Startup Awards finalists,” said Greg Morrisett, the Jack and Rilla Neafsey Dean and Vice Provost of Cornell Tech, who addressed participants at the start of the event. “Despite not being able to meet in person with their co-founders or initial users, our students rallied. They came up with innovative and ambitious companies to solve real-world problems, and in their rare spare time, they volunteered with relief efforts to help their community on Roosevelt Island and throughout the city.”

Startup Studio is one of two capstone courses of Cornell Tech’s studio curriculum. Students can also take BigCo Studio, which teaches them to innovate within large companies.

Startup Studio brings together multidisciplinary teams and industry professionals to help students innovate new products and services. Since its inception, the studio program has produced 60 companies, 90% of which are headquartered in New York City. The companies have drawn more than $80 million in startup funding, and six have been acquired by companies including Adobe, Infor and MINDBODY.

“Working with the tech industry, especially here in New York City, is part of the mission of the Cornell Tech campus,” Morrisett said. “Our goal is to train students to build companies that are not only commercially viable, but lead to a better, more ethical and more sustainable world. Open Studio plays a vital role in meeting that mission.”

In addition to shifting their collaborations to an online format, many of the students also pivoted their startup ideas to address new challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, OnePlace, the family operating system, emphasized the need to have important documents easily accessible. Companies related to gaming, online shopping and community building have new relevance with so much of our lives taking place online, their founders said in their presentations.

“This is an unprecedented time for Cornell Tech and the tech industry, challenging all of us to rethink the products we build and how we build them in light of COVID-19,” said Thatcher Bell, head of Startup Studio. “Iteration is a core value at Cornell Tech, and our startup teams quickly adapted to launching their companies completely virtually while reshaping their products and services to the changing needs of their customers and stakeholders.”

After the presentation of the Startup Awards, participants could visit breakout rooms featuring other projects developed in Startup and BigCo Studio, as well as Runway Startup Postdocs at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute.

Startup Studio is run by Bell; Josh Hartmann, Cornell Tech chief practice officer; Aaron Holiday, managing entrepreneurial officer and co-founder and managing director of 645 Ventures; and Leandra Elberger, studio director. BigCo Studio is taught by Cornell Tech fellow Chad Dickerson and Bradley Horowitz, vice president of product management at Google.

Cornell Tech has announced a $1 million grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies to jumpstart its Public Interest Tech (PiTech) initiative. PiTech will be geared toward developing the tools, systems, data sets, research, and education needed to address significant public sector concerns.

The gift will help Cornell Tech create the foundational infrastructure for the PiTech initiative, which bridges the gap between the public and private sectors in much the same way public interest law does. The goal is to build a community of researchers and practitioners dedicated to addressing societal challenges that might otherwise “fall between the cracks” of federal research funding, commercial investment, and foundation support.

A full circle of giving to Cornell

The Atlantic Philanthropies, founded by Charles F. Feeney ’56, has a long history of giving to Cornell University. In 2011, Atlantic made its largest ever commitment, $350 million, to support the establishment of Cornell Tech at a critical moment in Cornell’s winning bid to build an applied sciences and technology campus in New York City.

A great differentiator for Cornell Tech

Upon joining Cornell Tech in summer 2019, Greg Morrisett, Jack and Rilla Neafsey Dean and vice provost of Cornell Tech, elevated PiTech as a priority for campus.

Associate dean for impact and Robert V. Tishman ’37 Professor Deborah Estrin was also instrumental in coordinating the Atlantic gift. She works to strengthen Cornell Tech’s external relationships with public, private, and non-profit organizationsin service of campus-wide initiatives.

“This generous seed gift from The Atlantic Philanthropies will enable early concept testing as a foundation for our large-scale launch,” said Estrin, “creating a platform for shaping new technologies to meet unmet public interest needs.

 

A model for collaboration in the public interest

In the near term, the Atlantic gift will help Cornell Tech seed the infrastructure necessary to catalyze collaboration among technical, policy, and community experts and develop technologies in the public interest. The initiative will span both Cornell Tech and Ithaca campuses, uniting public interest tech activity university-wide.

One of the driving inspirations for PiTech was the tech clinic, a form of public interest tech which emerged organically at Cornell Tech. The first tech clinic launched in fall 2019, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence. The Clinic to End Tech Abuse (CETA) supports survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). By pairing Cornell Tech’s expertise in human-computer interaction and security with engagement by IPV victims and policymakers, Professors Nicki Dell and Tom Ristenpart developed a computer security clinic that helps IPV survivors navigate technology abuse. They are now scaling the clinic to serve the larger New York City metropolitan region and helping to create a model that is replicable across the country.

The Atlantic gift will help support the establishment of two additional tech clinics over the next two years. These clinics will focus the expertise of Cornell Tech faculty on public interest research. “For example, the current COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the need for sociotechnical solutions around disease surveillance and home-based medical care,” explained Estrin.

 

A strategy for the post-COVID-19 world

As New York City and communities around the world look to rebound in the post-COVID-19 era, there is widespread consensus that recovery should be driven by sound data. Shalini Mimani, associate vice president for Alumni Affairs and Development at Cornell Tech, believes that Cornell Tech and its researchers are well positioned to fill the need for data-science based decision making and technology-enabled interventions that will be critical to drive the recovery effort in New York City, New York state, and beyond.

“Cornell Tech researchers and students are poised to work across technology, policy, and industry networks to assess and develop approaches that can support communities affected by these challenges. PiTech will be particularly relevant as New York City and the world at large struggle to recover from the social and economic impact of the pandemic.” Mimani said.

The gift will support the launch of a Public Interest Tech Studio, which will provide master’s students with product development and entrepreneurial experience addressing real-world public interest challenges with non-profits and other socially-minded organizations. In Studio, a core part of the Cornell Tech curriculum, students work in interdisciplinary teams to develop tech solutions for startups, companies, and organizations in New York City.

Examples of the kinds of issues PiTech could help address include:

  • How might we rapidly build tools for monitoring and managing a public health crisis?
  • How might we support public school systems in assessing the fairness and privacy features of the software platforms they increasingly depend upon?
  • How might we bring the ease and enjoyment of consumer technologies to the elderly, or others with impaired sight, hearing, or mobility?
  • How might we leverage community participation in data-driven decision making to help cities address the challenges of climate change?

 

A grand vision fueled by an in-house engine

The long-term goal is to create an Institute for Public Interest Technology at Cornell Tech, which would incubate and launch tech clinics and support related research, education, and policy making in the public interest.

“Cornell Tech attracts faculty and students who are compelled by the unique social impact mission of the campus and its unparalleled offering of world-class technical depth in the heart of NYC,” said Estrin. “This gift will give us the resources to further expand this social impact work.”

Since its founding, Cornell Tech has graduated 800 students, recruited 27 faculty, and established eight technical and industry-focused master’s degree programs. There are currently about 440 master’s and PhD students enrolled.

Cornell Tech is slated to enroll 1800 students and employ 250 faculty by 2043, as part of its commitment to the city. The campus plans to double the size of its faculty and student body over the next five years.

Four student companies receive co-working space and $100,000 in pre-seed funding to pursue their startups after graduation.

NEW YORK, NY – Cornell Tech awarded four student startup companies with pre-seed funding worth up to $100,000 in its sixth annual Startup Awards competition. The awards were announced at Cornell Tech’s first-ever virtual Open Studio, the campus’ end-of-year celebration of startups and presentation of cutting-edge research, projects, and companies founded at Cornell Tech. A panel of tech industry leaders and executives selected the winning student teams.

Since Startup Studio launched, five companies have been acquired: Uru, acquired by Adobe; Trigger Finance, acquired by Circle; Gitlinks, acquired by Infor; Bowtie, acquired by MINDBODY; and Thread Learning, acquired by CentralReach. In total, startups that have been founded and spun out on campus — including Startup Studio and the Runway Startup Postdocs at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute — have raised more than $102 million in funding and employ nearly 300 people.

Cornell Tech’s Startup Studio program is run by Bell along with Chief Practice Officer Josh Hartmann; Managing Entrepreneurial Officer Aaron Holiday, Co-founder and Managing Director of 645 Ventures; and Leandra Elberger, Studio Director. The Startup Awards are a capstone of the Studio curriculum, a critical component of the master’s experience at Cornell Tech which brings together multi-disciplinary teams to solve real-world problems. In the final semester, some students form teams and enroll in Startup Studio, where they combine their diverse program disciplines — computer science, operations research and information engineering, business, health tech, connective media, electrical and computer engineering, and law — to develop ideas and prototypes for their startup in an academic setting. Students who don’t enroll in Startup Studio take the BigCo Studio track, a course that teaches students how to innovate within larger companies, including navigating complex cultures, pitching to the people who control budgets, and building projects to scale. 

The Startup Award winners also received coworking space at the Tata Innovation Center on Cornell Tech’s campus. Designed by Weiss/Manfredi architects, the first-of-its-kind building houses an extraordinary mix of cutting-edge companies working alongside groundbreaking Cornell academic teams: from recent Cornell Tech graduates hustling to commercialize a new idea, to start-ups on the verge of explosive growth, and established companies developing leading-edge technologies and products. Tenants include tech and investment firm Two Sigma, Citigroup, Ferrero International, Tata Consultancy Services, and NYC FIRST.
