Students at Cornell Tech are trying to help you text and walk safely.

Tug, a smartphone app created by Cornell Tech and Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute students, was featured by CBS New York for its progress in protecting pedestrians from oncoming traffic.

“When the red hand comes up, that red hand notification will be pushed from the light pole to the screen of the phone itself, alerting them that it’s not safe to walk,” Tug Team member Emily McAllister explained to CBS.

McAllister worked with fellow students Mani Miri, Daniel Levine and Rohit Jain on the project.

The inspiration for the award-winning app came from the problem itself. “If the smartphone is the source of the problem, the smartphone can be also the source of the solution,” Miri told CBS.
